About Career competence

Career competence is competence that enables people to manage their careers, also in change and transitions.

It is the competence to know and understand oneself and one`s context, to act and make choices, and to manage dilemmas and tensions associated with life, learning and work. It involves an awareness that individuals are shaped by their life circumstances and actions, but that they can also influence and shape their own and society’s future.

Career learning can take place in many ways, different kinds of services and with different target groups. The model illustrates that contextual factors will have a bearing on how the career learning best can be facilitated. It can be factors like time, place, target group, available resources, and competence.
