When will you receive the decision letter?

The case processing time is approximately 4 months.

If the application is missing documentation

If we need additional documentation, you will receive an e-mail with information about the specific documents that are missing. Please log in to the application portal to upload the necessary documents. Read more about our documentation requirements for recognition of teacher education.

Response to the application

You will be notified when we have processed the application and the decision letter is ready. We use a digital mailbox. If you want the decision letter to be sent there, you must create your own digital mailbox (difi.no). You will also find a copy of the decision letter in the applicant portal.

You will receive one of the following results:

  • Recognition
  • Compensation measures (only for EEA and Switzerland)
  • Rejection
  • Dismissal

Recognition as a head of kindergarten or educational supervisor in kindergarten

If you receive a recognition, you are qualified for employment as a head of kindergarten or educational supervisor in kindergarten. However, it is up to the employer to assess whether your Norwegian language skills are sufficient and whether you are qualified for a specific position.

Compensation measures

If you receive a decision of compensation measures, it means that you do not meet all the requirements for recognition but can obtain recognition as a teacher by passing an aptitude test or an adaptation period. This opportunity can only be achieved if you have the right to practice the profession under the Professional Qualifications Directive.

An aptitude test consists of one or more written tasks followed by an oral examination. The aptitude tests are evaluated by external experts (assessors) from Norwegian educational institutions. It is the directorate that organizes the aptitude tests.

An adaptation period means that you find a school that is willing to guide and assess your competence while you work. The content, tasks, and responsibilities during the adaptation period are developed in cooperation between you, the school, and us in the directorate.

Rejection of application

If you receive a decision of rejection, it means that we have assessed that you do not have qualifications equivalent to the Norwegian qualifications, that you do not have teacher education from abroad, and that your education does not meet the requirements for approval.

Dismissal of application

If you receive a decision of dismissal, it means that we cannot or should not process your application. The reasons for the dismissal are explained in more detail in the decision letter. This could be, for example, because:

  • You have not uploaded all the required documents.
  • You have previously applied and have not submitted new documents or new information with the application.
  • You have already received approval.
