Brazil and Norway: Strengthening partnerships for global sustainable development

Meet Brazilian and Norwegian researchers, educators and leaders working to strengthen their partnerships for global sustainable development. Biodiversity, climate change, bioeconomy, indigenous knowledge and how to ensure reciprocity in the collaborations, are themes being raised.

In this physical one-day seminar, at the University PUC-Rio in Rio de Janeiro, you will hear about the importance of global partnerships to strengthen sustainable development.

You will learn about biodiversity in the Amazon, how to incorporate local knowledge and the importance of combining teaching, research and stakeholder engagement in the joint work.

You will learn about climate change, how it affects people, politics and how the Amazon has a central role in future climate change.

You will be able to learn and discuss themes like "the new bioeconomy" and how to make peace with nature, in a workshop where collaborations in agriculture and technology, bioeconomy and biorefining of remaining biomass are presented.

You will be able to learn and discuss collaboration and care with indigenous and marginalised peoples in education and research and how their knowledge is importance for nature conservation.

You will be able to learn about how to secure reciprocity in educational collaboration, involving student and staff exchange, through a panel discussion between universities, student organisations and students.

You will be able to hear the Norwegian Minister for Research and Higher Education, Mr. Oddmund Hoel, talk about the importance of collaboration between Brazil and Norway in research, higher education and innovation.

Background:

Biodiversity and climate are among the prioritised areas for collaboration between Brazil and Norway within research and innovation. Brazil invited Norway as a guest country in this years G20 meetings in Research and Innovation in Manaus, and the international conference there on the Amazon and tropical forest. This seminar in Rio de Janeiro is meant to strengthening the bonds between the two countries in themes related to biodiversity, climate, environment, indigenous peoples, bioeconomy, biotechnology and tropical forests.

The seminar has been planned in connection with the Norwegian Minister for Research and Higher Education, Mr. Oddmund Hoel's, visit to the G20 meeting in Manaus.

The organisators are: The Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research, Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills, The Research Council of Norway, Innovation Norway and the Brazilian University PUC-Rio.

  • The seminar will be in English. No translations will be given.
  • There seminar require physical attendance.
  • Times given in the Agenda, are in local (Rio de Janeiro) timezone, exept for the registration deadline, which are in the timezone of Oslo.
  • Please register within: Friday 13th September at 14:00 (Rio-time) / 19:00 (Oslo-time)
  • PS: The seminar room has an upper limit on 100 persons, so the seminar may be fully booked if you register too late.
